The super-election year is coming to an end: the new global political scenarios

The election in the United States with Donald Trump’s victory was not the only one: 2024 was a super-election year, with Europeans being called to the polls to elect the new EU Parliament and the world’s most populous country, India, declaring itself in favour of a third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, there have also been elections in France, Austria, Great Britain and Mexico to name but a few (the electoral round was estimated to have involved around 2 billion people). These are all extraordinarily important countries from a geopolitical point of view.

The geopolitical scenario looking to 2025

It is now important to understand the consequences of this huge upheaval, while in the background there are two wars under way, in Ukraine and in the Middle East, which are equally significant in terms of international repercussions. The US result is thus only the last of the electoral steps announced, but Trump’s return poses a series of political and economic questions and solicitations for Europe with the US tariff strategy that will put the EU countries’ export system in serious difficulty. In particular, Italy risks ending up under pressure, as it sees the USA as one of its privileged markets.

But there are several factors that make the scenario even more complex. The world seems increasingly inconsistent in the face of the proliferation of fake news and populism; the many conflicts, even micro-ones, damage the movement of goods and we must look carefully at Africa, to which Italy has addressed its Mattei plan. Not to mention how important it will be in 2025 to understand how relations, which are always very delicate, with China and Russia will develop.

A Masterclass to address the implications for Governance and Corporate Management

The Masterclass – Geopolitical Scenarios, US Elections, and Financial Markets was designed to address the effects on management strategies and risk management in the era of major changes and major evolutions in global political scenarios. Led by Marco Giorgino, Senior Professor at POLIMI Graduate School of Management and Scientific Director of Banking and Finance and Chair of Finance for several MBAs and Executive MBAs, the Masterclass aims to provide a key reading on the impact that international geopolitical scenarios will have on financial markets, governance, business strategy, risk management and management choices, starting with the outcome of the US general election. For example, President-elect Trump has threatened 100% tariffs on imports of certain European products, including the Piaggio Vespa. However, the context is much broader and the Masterclass aims to provide participants with tools to interpret global dynamics, anticipate possible repercussions and crises in their business environments.
